Good Results fot tourism in Queretaro

Tourism is an important economic activ

Tourism is an important economic activity for our State, and fortunately it is having good results. According to the statistics published by the Ministry of Tourism (SECTUR), the three main destinies monitored in Queretaro (Tequisquiapan, San Juan del Río and Queretaro City) received around 1.3 million tourists during 2012, a 9.2% increase compared to 2011, a rate above the growth that the main 70 tourist destinies had in the country.

However, the results are not equally good for the three cities mentioned: for example, Queretaro is by far the destination that receives most tourists (80% of the 1.3 million), San Juan del Rio is the one that had the biggest annual growth (19%), and Tequisquiapan had the slowest growth (2.6%). These results show very different competitive positions that I will analyze from two other perspectives: the increase in offer of rooms for each destination, that shows the confidence and investments involved in each city, and the percentage of rooms used, that is a combination of the balance of the previous variables (offer of rooms and tourists received).

The city of Queretaro comes from an amazing 2011, when the available rooms grew almost 20% in a year! The increase in the number of tourists and the nights they spent here could not match that rate, and as a consequence, we had a slight decrease in the percentage of occupancy. But the dynamics changed in 2012: we still had an increase in available rooms, but a lot slower (4.6%), and a bigger increase in tourists and in the length of their stays, which caused an increase in the levels of occupancy and for the first time since 2008 it reached the 60% levels. We are still far from the 67% level of 2007, but the numbers show a positive trend.

San Juan del Rio has a very different situation, in almost all aspects: during 2011 it had a decrease in the offer of rooms, followed by a strong increase of 11.6% in 2012. The number of tourists had a similar behavior, with a decrease in 2011 and the biggest growth in 2012, as mentioned before. The result of both behaviors is a continuous growth in the percentage of occupancy, which has come from 38.7% in 2010 to 47.7% in 2012, the highest level of the last 8 years.

Finally, on the other hand, Tequisquiapan shows a not so favorable story: the increase in available rooms has been marginal (1% in 2012), the growth of tourists received had a sharp fall from 18% in 2011 to 2.6% in 2012, and in the worst side, the number of the total nights that the tourists spent there fell 1% last year. This has caused that occupancy levels fell last year, to a very low 21% level.

So, in general, 2012 showed a better balance in the offer-demand ratio, that lead to better occupancy rates in general. If your business is related to tourism, you may find more favorable perspectives in Queretaro and San Juan del Rio, not yet in Tequisquiapan. A key factor for us will be the strength of the internal market, since 95% of the tourists we receive are national. Based on these results and profile, make your projections for 2013.
